Horseback Riding at the End of the World

The Mitre peninsula is a special place in Argentina. It is located in the extreme southern part of Tierra del Fuego and, hence, literally at the end of the world. This adventurous trip takes place in an unspoilt place far away from civilization. You discover one of the most interesting regions of Latin America on horseback.

Detailed Program

DAY 1 – LEAVING USHUAIA

A car brings you from Ushuaia to the starting point of the expedition. This trip of 230 km (143 miles) takes you through the Andean mountain range with splendid views of various lakes. On a typical Patagonian estancia (ranch) you meet the horses and the gauchos (cowboys) that groom them. Although you have to cross a small river today, this first day is not too heavy, giving you time to acclimatize. In the late-afternoon you reach the first campsite, where you sleep in a tent. This is the last place where you will see other people until your return!

DAY 2 – WRECKED SHIPS AND INTERESTING FAUNA

The first longer day on horseback starts when you start to ride away from civilization. You pass wrecked ships that stranded on these deserted beaches a long time ago. You may spot some of the species that live here, such as foxes, guanacos, beavers, sea-lions and other sea mammals as well as condors and many other different birds.

DAY 3 – ONLY ANIMALS LIVE HERE

The day starts by crossing two rivers and you ride through some wetlands. We often come across wild horses in this region and we also pass a colony of sea lions. Afterwards you pas through a wide valley, where the remains of an old estancia can be found.

DAY 4 – THROUGH MORE DIFFICULT TERRAIN

After riding mainly on the beach for the last few days, it is time for a change. You ride inwards from the coast and pass through a moor, which at times forces you to dismount. You reach a small lake where you can expect to see some more unique fauna such as condors, cormorants, albatrosses and wild ducks. You come close to a colony of sea-lions, which depending on the season, may recently have given birth to some puppies. The second part of the day brings you through a moor again, which you have to pass on foot. Afterwards you return to the coast where you can enjoy a beautiful view.

DAY 5 – A DAY AT LEISURE

You have reached the most distant point of the expedition at the most eastern part of Tierra del Fuego. You can spend this day at your leisure. It is also possible to make a seven hour hike while the horses get some rest. During the hike you can have a close encounter with guanacos and sea-lions and on the top of a hill you have a 360º panoramic view. You can see the Atlantic Ocean, the Beagle Channel, the Le Maire Strait and Staten Island from this point. Make sure you bring some trekking shoes for this hike.

DAY 6 – ANOTHER DAY AT LEISURE

You can relax at the world’s end or make some small hikes in the vicinity of the camp during another day at leisure.

DAY 7 – BACK THROUGH THE MOOR

You start to head back and the first part brings you through the moor. You get a good feel for the strength of the criollo horses when they pass through this terrain. Enjoy the colors of the sea, the Andes and the subantarctic forest.

DAY 8 – WIDE BEACHES

After riding through a moor you pass a wide river (the most dangerous of the expedition) in order to get to some wide beaches. Let the wind blow around your head when you gallop over the sand. Via various beaches and capes you reach the hut where you will spend the night. As the luggage is reduced, we can gallop and trot now.

DAY 9 – UP THE CAPE

After crossing a river you ride up a cape, from where you have a nice view of the surroundings. Afterwards you gallop on the beach to reach the hut where you stay tonight. As this is the last night of the expedition, a farewell dinner will be served tonight.

DAY 10 – BACK TO USHUAIA

You ride to the estancia where our trip started and you say goodbye to the horses and gauchos before a car brings you back to Ushuaia.
