NATURE AND GALLOP

The tour starts in the amazing Esteros del Iberá, the world’s second largest wetland area. On horseback you ride (and partially swim) to an island in the middle of the reserve. You have time to explore the amazing wildlife of the Esteros del Iberá while making a boat tour before you continue your journey towards a typical Argentine estancia. There you can feel like a true gaucho, galopping over the fields. If you want, you can also assist the gauchos when they drive the cattle!

Detailed Program

DAY 1 – LEAVING BUENOS AIRES

Our guide picks you up at your hotel and brings you to the main bus station in Buenos Aires. You board the night bus and can relax in a very comfortable seat.

DAY 2 – ARRIVAL IN THE ESTEROS DEL IBERÁ

Early in the morning you reach the city of Mercedes in the province Corrientes. Upon arrival, you are taken to the city of Concepción. This is a typical village for the region, with old adobe houses, small grocery stores, saddleries and unpaved roads. The families of gauchos that work in the Esteros del Iberá tend to live in these kind of villages. After a short visit to the village, you are taken to the estancia (ranch). It is located at the border of the Reserve Esteros del Iberá not far from the village. After lunch you get to know the horses and you make a short ride on the estancia’s grounds in order to get to familiarise yourself with horse, saddle and gear. Afterwards, sharing a cup of mate (the famous local infusion), the local guide gives you some details about the tour of the next day. At night you can enjoy an asado (the famous Argentine barbecue).

DAY 3 – RIDING AND SWIMMING TO AN ISLAND

As today’s ride is long, you have to rise early to have breakfast. When the sun comes out, you mount your horse and ride into the wetlands. After approximately two hours, you reach the first river that you need to cross. From here onwards you are crossing the Esteros de Iberá, partly on horseback, and in two or three occasions (depending on the level of the water) swimming. A gaucho accompanies you in his canoe, taking care of your luggage. All horses know how to swim by nature and these horses have done it many times. Hence, just enjoy the experience of swimming with your horse! The rest of the way, you pass through water and gallop over extensive green pampas. You pass by various ranches that are typical for the region. Your picnic lunch below the carob trees might be disturbed by some howler monkeys, which live in this area. You have now reached the island and it is only one and a half to two hours riding to the estancia, where you will spend the night. Upon arrival you can enjoy the woods surrounding the estancia as well as the great food. At night you might hear the sound of capybaras grazing just outside your window.

DAY 4 – BOAT TOUR THROUGH THE ESTEROS DEL IBERÁ

After the home-made breakfast, you make a boat tour through the Esteros del Iberá. This part of the wetlands is particularly known for its abundant wildlife. You might come across many of the approximately 300 bird species, including different species of storks (including the famous Jabiru stork, the tallest flying bird of South America), kingfishers, cormorants, rheas, herons, egrets, ibises, spoonbills, southern screamers, ducks, vultures, hawks and hummingbirds. Moreover, you might see other animals such as caimans, capybaras, monkeys and swamp deer. Afterwards, you are taken back to the mainland in boat and a car takes you from there to a typical Argentinean estancia, where you enjoy dinner in the beautiful garden of the main house.

DAY 5 – GALOPPING OVER THE PAMPA

The estancia offers various rides and you can choose how long you want to ride (varying from one to eight hours). You can also choose to make two different rides, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, so you don’t miss out on the delicious lunch. The rides bring you across the pampa, ideal for a gallop, towards woods, neighbouring estancias, old farm houses, rivers and lagoons. Often rheas and storks are spotted along the way, running respectively flying alongside you. Enjoy the vastness of the Argentinean pampa while you ride over the fields! In between rides you can relax at the pool or stroll through the garden of the estancia.

DAY 6 – WORKING WITH THE GAUCHOS

You get up early to work with the gauchos in the field. You can drive the cattle together with the gauchos or assist them with their other daily tasks such as vaccination, sanitary bathing and branding cattle. This is one of the few places in the world, where you can participate in the activities of an extensive breeding farm! Enjoy your own gaucho experience!

DAY 7 – ANOTHER DAY AT THE ESTANCIA

You have one more day to enjoy the activities at the estancia. You can either go for a ride or work with the gauchos as you prefer. It is time for a last gallop over the fields before you are taken to the airport in Goya from where you fly back to Buenos Aires. Upon arrival in the city, our driver will take you to your hotel.
